Merger & Strategic Alliances
We are in a period of consolidation in the nonprofit sector. Financial pressures, as well as the search for greater efficiencies, have led many organizations to pursue mergers and other forms of strategic alliances.

As an Interim Executive Director, I have led three different organizations through merger negotiations. Two of these resulted in successful mergers, while in the third situation it became clear the organizations would not be good partners and we chose to not merge. I have also worked with other Board of Directors in discussions of whether or not a merger was the appropriate strategy at that point in the organization's growth.

It is also important to recognize that greater efficiencies and savings can result from many levels of strategic partnership, and do not necessarily require a full merger. I can work with your nonprofit in exploring these different types of partnerships.

My work with your organization may take many forms, including:
  • Board sessions to explore if this is an appropriate strategy for your nonprofit.
  • Private exploration with potential matches for your merger.
  • Facilitation of merger/alliance negotiations.
  • Interim Executive Director services during a transition.
